Using a story and a "doctor's kit," students learn the importance of immunizations, then draw pictures that show who gives them immunizations and where they go to get them. Students are asked to explain the importance of immunizations.
Have doctor's kits for students, if possible.
Add a picture of a syringe or a child getting a shot to the unit bulletin board.
Read and discuss The Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor by Jan and Stan Berenstain.
Synopsis: This book describes Sister and Brother Bears' well-patient visit to the doctor.

Ask students why the doctor would give someone who wasn't sick a shot.

Provide students with doctor's kits, if possible, and let them role-play well-patient visits. Be sure they include immunizations as part of the visit.
Teacher Tip: Explain that the exams they role-play will be done over clothing and that nobody should remove any clothing.
