Students identify valid sources of health information. Student groups research about the variety of medical treatments.
Students will evaluate the validity of health information and services.
Have overhead projector.
Have available in class articles from professional health journals, contemporary magazines read by students and newspapers. Articles should address a particular health topic, if possible (e.g., nutrition, exercise), so students can compare the information presented.
Have available in class some information about alternative, holistic, folk or complementary medicine.

Ask groups to critique the articles and prepare to report to the full class their assessment of the reliability of the information.
Review the issues involved in selecting medical treatment.
Assign each of the four student groups (from Step One) one of the following topics:
Provide access to the Internet or other sources of information for students. Ask students to apply the elements in the visual_aids to the various treatment options, including conventional medical treatments.
Have students select an illness and develop a report that compares a conventional treatment method with an alternative medical practice for that illness. Students should decide which treatment method or which elements of multiple treatment methods they would choose to use and give reasons for their selections. Have students cite references used in their research and assess the validity of the references.
