Vocabulary
  • CONCENTRATION - the ability to pay attention to a task, like taking a test Getting 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night can improve my concentration.
  • GLYCOGEN - the main form of carbohydrate stored by the body and used by the brain and muscles for energy I had a bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and raisins to get the glycogen my brain needs for energy.
  • NUTRIENT-RICH - describes a food that has lots of important substances that give us energy as well as help us grow and be healthy The morning before a test, I will eat a nutrient-rich breakfast that includes whole grains, a protein and fruits or vegetables.
  • TEST ANXIETY - when uncomfortable feelings prevent you from performing well on tests Paco practiced deep breathing to help him overcome test anxiety.

Step 1: Preview the Interactive Presentation
  • Click on the Interactive Presentation. On the top right of each slide, you’ll see the letter “i” –click on it to view the Teacher Notes.
  • Review or print the Teacher Resources handout, “Interactive Presentation Slide Notes.” This PDF includes a small version of each slide and the “Teacher Notes.” Keep in mind that to understand the real “interactivity” of the whiteboard lesson, you will need to look at the slides themselves.
Step 2: Review ʺTest Readinessʺ articles: Exercise, Sleep, Breakfast, and Deep Breathing

As you prepare to teach this lesson, you may find it helpful to review the “Test Readiness” articles (Exercise, Sleep, Breakfast, and Deep Breathing). In these articles, we've compiled information about four health skills that can help students do their best on standardized tests. You don't have to share this with your students when you show them the Interactive Presentation. They will use these articles when they complete exercise two.

Step 3: Show the Interactive Presentation to your students

Don't have an interactive whiteboard? Display these slides using a standard projector system. Write key concepts on the chalkboard. Or print out the “Teacher Notes” and lead a classroom discussion covering these health concepts.
