It used to be that kids who were bullied at school counted down the hours until the end of the day. That's when they could go home and escape the pain and anguish of being picked on. These days, with the prevalence of text messaging and communication via the Internet, however, kids who are bullied never really escape it.
It's called cyber-bullying, and an estimated 10 percent of adolescents are victims, according to new research from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
In some cases, cyber-bullying can lead to depression, or worse, suicide. That's why school districts like the Green Bay Area Public Schools in Green Bay, Wis., are instituting policies that target cyber-bullying. In Green Bay, students who engage in cyber-bullying outside of school can not only face police consequences, but also school consequences.
