A new study by the U.S. Department of Justice shows a drop in bullying among kids, suggesting to some experts that intervention and awareness programs are effective.
The study found that the percentage of children who reported being physically bullied over the past year declined from nearly 22 percent in 2003 to under 15 percent in 2008. The percentage reporting they'd been assaulted by other youths dropped from 45 percent to 38.4 percent in the same time period.
Professor David Finkelhor, lead author of the study, points to anti-bullying campaigns, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, that were instituted following the 1999 Columbine High School massacre as one of the reasons for the drop.
