Monitoring Technology Use Key as Access Improves

Improving access to technology like broadband Internet and laptop computers should be a good thing, but studies show that many American kids, particularly low-income ones, are simply wasting time on these devices, according to the New York Times. In fact, studies show the problem is so bad that the Federal Communications Commission is considering a $200 million proposal to create a digital literacy corps.

"This group of hundreds, even thousands, of trainers would fan out to schools and libraries to teach productive uses of computers for parents, students and job seekers," according to the New York Times.

Advocates of increasing access to technology say they didn't anticipate how computers and other devices would be used for entertainment.
